Crypto enthusiasts got some exciting news yesterday as the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) gave regulatory approval for the city’s first spot Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) exchange-traded funds (ETFs). This is a huge development for the cryptocurrency market as the United States Securities and Exchange (SEC) had approved the first spot Bitcoin ETF earlier this year. But what exactly is an ETF and how will this affect the crypto market?

Bitcoin exchange-traded fund or ETF is similar to a regular ETF that trades on stock exchanges. It tracks the price performance of Bitcoin and people can buy and sell shares through their brokerage accounts. It is important to understand that there are two types of ETFs, spot ETFs and futures ETFs. The Hong Kong approval in discussion here is for spot ETFs which holds Bitcoin as the underlying cryptocurrency, unlike the futures ETFs which work by investing in futures contracts for Bitcoin, rather than Bitcoin itself.

Spot ETFs make the investment of Bitcoin easier and more accessible to a larger number of people, which is bound to have a positive impact on Bitcoin’s price over the coming months and years. This move by Hong Kong opens up a completely new market with millions of potential buyers and sellers of Bitcoin in the most populous country in the world. This increased demand should result in a surge in price for Bitcoin as more people get access to investment tools, potentially driving the price upwards.

It is also pertinent to mention here that Hong Kong is regarded as one of the main financial centers in the world and this move by the Hong Kong SFC will give Bitcoin greater legitimacy as a viable investment asset just like investments in gold or the US dollar. The same can be concluded for Ethereum as it is regarded as the second most reliable and practical cryptocurrency in the world after Bitcoin.

The news about the Hong Kong spot Bitcoin ETFs has already increased the price of Bitcoin. It saw a low of below 62,000 USD at the start of the day but it surged to above 64,000 USD as the day went along. Ethereum experienced a similar trend as it experienced a low of almost 3000 USD and after this news rose to about 3100 USD.

The overall outlook for Bitcoin and Ethereum is positive and on the back of the new Hong Kong ETFs, these cryptocurrencies will only grow in value and practical usage with time.
