Following a leadership restructure in March, the Ethereum Foundation is realigning its priorities, focusing on practical enhancements such as user experience and Layer-1 scalability. This move gives co-founder Vitalik Buterin more freedom to pursue innovative research and develop long-term solutions for the Ethereum network.

To keep pace with the evolving blockchain space, the Ethereum Foundation is shifting focus toward Layer-1 scalability, user experience, and deployable upgrades. This strategic change enhances efficiency while allowing Vitalik Buterin to concentrate on Ethereum’s long-term vision and research.

Vitalik Buterin focuses on Ethereum privacy roadmap

After stepping back from daily duties, Vitalik Buterin has focused on research, notably unveiling a privacy roadmap for Ethereum. In his April 11 post, he proposed making privacy features default, using anonymization tools to protect users' identities and transactions—especially in areas like DeFi and digital identity.

Rather than final solutions, Buterin’s ideas are meant to spark discussion and guide collaborative improvements across the Ethereum community.

User experience upgrades take center stage

According to Tomasz Stańczak—appointed as co-executive director on March 17—the Ethereum Foundation is now prioritizing user experience (UX) enhancements as part of its short-term goals.

In his post on April 21, Stańczak revealed that major upcoming protocol upgrades—Pectra, Fusaka, and Glamsterdam—will focus on:

  • Making the Ethereum network more user-friendly.
  • Improving interoperability between different Ethereum layers and applications.
  • Offering better Layer-2 support for scaling technologies like rollups and zkVMs.

These upgrades aim to solve long-standing UX pain points such as high gas fees, slow confirmation times, and fragmented application experiences. The Foundation hopes that by significantly improving UX, Ethereum can retain its current user base while attracting new developers, businesses, and everyday users into the ecosystem.

Layer-1 scaling solutions to improve network efficiency

Alongside user experience upgrades, the Ethereum Foundation is prioritizing Layer-1 scaling to enhance performance and network efficiency. Vitalik Buterin recently proposed EVM upgrades to improve execution speed and reduce transaction costs.

The Foundation is also developing a next-gen consensus layer to meet future demands. While full implementation may take 1–2 years, these efforts aim to balance short-term impact with long-term scalability for millions of users.
